As the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament kicks off on June 11, Jakarta Police said Sunday they would intensify surveillance on the Internet to crack down on possible online gambling.
Even popular social networking sites such as Facebook are currently being monitored by police.
“We will also find out whether virtual poker games played in social networking sites such as Facebook involve gambling,” police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar was quoted as saying Sunday by news portal vivanews.com.
Earlier this month, police arrested a suspect for allegedly operating two illegal gambling sites generating up to Rp 500 million (US$55,500) daily.
The two sites, www.ibcbet.com and www.casino.sbobet.com, provided online sports betting, roulette and poker games.
