PTWC lifts tsunami watch in Aceh


The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) lifted its tsunami watch associated with a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that rocked Aceh province on Sunday afternoon.

The center lifted the tsunami watch 1 hour and 25 minutes after the quake, PTWC said in its website.

The center said based on its observation the sea water level showed no sign of significant tsunami wave following the quake.

The quake which struck at 12.59 western Indonesian time on Sunday was centered 66 km southwest of Meulaboh in Aceh province at a depth of 30 km.

The quake prompted thousands of residents in the provincial capital Banda Aceh to flee their homes to higher grounds for fear of a tsunami.
